Oropi Bushlands Ltd - Farm Tours
Are the kids tired of being inside, do you need to get out and stretch your legs while enjoying the sights and sounds of a real New Zealand dairy farm with a difference? Oropi Bushlands Farm Tours are proud to offer family friendly, personalized guided tours over their 900 hectare high country property.
After pick up at a pre arranged spot we start our tour of the farm at the dairy shed where we can see where the milk comes from and what happens to it before it goes off in the milk tanker to the dairy factory. We learn how the farm is run and how we manage to get over 800 cows through our 20 aside herringbone cowshed. Then it’s up to the very top of the farm to start our tour.

Enjoy morning tea with a view (coffee, tea, water and cakes). The children can stretch their legs with a short run up what the locals call ‘Colin’s Hill’. Luckily for us adults the 4x4 goes all but five short minutes walk to our favourite picnic spot. For the more energetic walkers the view from the very top of this hill is worth another five minutes’ walk.
For the nature lovers we have over 100 hectares of native bush we will stroll through. This only requires a moderate level of fitness (it’s mostly downhill) but being bush tracks we must reasonably agile. Our first walk of around 40 minutes takes us along an old logging track through the native bush and past a lagoon which harbours ample bird life. There are always stories to be told about the history or even the future plans surrounding our beautiful farm. Then it’s back to the farm house to wash up and enjoy lunch. Lunch is scrumptious with fresh soft bread rolls filled with either ham, mustard, cheese and crisp greens salads tomato and beetroot or smoked chicken, camembert cheese, crisp green salads, tomato and beetroot then lavished with plum sauce. The children can enjoy the trampoline and depending on what time of the year, all the varied animals my family collects around our front yard. Top it all off with a lovely coffee (or tea), fruit juice, a delightfully tasty cheese board and sweet in season New Zealand grown fruit.
Next as we travel further down the farm we enjoy a shorter 20 minute walk into our beautiful waterfall where the children (or adults) may care to take a swim or just enjoy the sights and sounds. Once back in the 4x4 it’s off to the forestry conversion at the very end of the property.
A day of entertainment, education, relaxation and even some exercise all while being guided by someone who knows intimately how the farm has come to be running as it is today. That’s me, Fiona, a part owner and company director of Oropi Bushlands Limited. Welcome to my home and my life, come join me and my family and enjoy what we are privileged enough to be able to enjoy every day of our lives.
Oropi Bushlands Farm Tours can cater for people of varied agility and mobility. My 4x4 is unfortunately not set up with wheelchair access so a reasonable amount of mobility is required. Tours can be individually designed around group agility with more driving, less walking or more walking less driving as required, but as we use the farm tracks for most of the day please be aware there is a lot more movement inside the vehicle than on public roads.
Suitable footwear is required. Hiking boots/shoes are recommended but running/sand shoes are acceptable. Depending on weather conditions you may be more comfortable with a change of footwear in between bushwalks in case of wet feet.
Bottled water is provided throughout the day. Please wear a hat for sun protection. In the case of unexpected showers (which is not uncommon)I do have rainwear available but a warm jersey or jacket is recommended on every tour.
